Earlier this month Luke travelled with his friend Ruth Guilding, author-inventor of Bible of British Taste, through the deep damp green of Wales, arriving in the old slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog late on a Sunday. After an excursion the following day to Portmeirion, the Baroque folly village conceived and built by Clough Williams-Ellis over fifty years, Luke hauled his Chateau Orlando-stuffed suitcase over to Plas Brondanw, former home of the Williams-Ellis family. Here in the enclosed garden rooms Luke photographed local potter Erin Lloyd amongst yew trees and exquisite painted ironwork, then up a tower in Clough's enchanting Folly Castle across the way, the mountains of Snowdonia meanwhile a constant and shadowy presence in the distance...
