A kneeler is a cushion (also called a hassock) used for resting in a kneeling position during prayer. In many churches, cathedrals and abbeys across Britain, pews are equipped with kneelers so members of the congregation can kneel on them instead of the floor. Artist, writer and curator Lally Macbeth makes a case for the humble church kneeler as folk-art object. Churchgoers often design and make their own kneelers, decorating them with references to local wildlife or history, buildings or people.
